Who Has Obligations

Find Your WEEE Obligations by How You Sell

Your obligations depend on your role in the supply chain and how much you place on the UK market. Pick the one that sounds like you.

If Your Name Is on the Product

  • You are the producer, whether you make the product yourself or have it made for you.
  • 5 tonnes or more a year means joining an approved compliance scheme.
  • You report what you place on the market by category, split by household and non-household use.

If You Import Electrical Products

  • The business that first places a product on the UK market is usually the producer.
  • The same 5 tonne line decides whether you join a scheme or register direct.
  • Products you import and sell on to other businesses still count, reported as non-household.

If You Sell Online

  • Since 12 August 2025, online marketplaces are treated as producers for electrical products sold through them by overseas sellers.
  • UK sellers with their own brand or imports have producer duties of their own.
  • Selling to UK households also brings take-back duties.

If You Sell Electrical Products to Households

  • Selling new electrical equipment brings take-back duties for the old equipment it replaces.
  • If you also import or sell under your own brand, you have producer duties too.
  • We help you work out which duties apply and how to meet them.

If You Place Under 5 Tonnes a Year

  • You can register direct with the regulator as a small producer by 31 January.
  • Or join a scheme, which registers you and handles your reporting.
  • The threshold is measured on what you place on the UK market in the compliance year.

If You Place Batteries on the Market

  • Portable battery producers placing over 1 tonne a year join a battery compliance scheme by 15 October.
  • Batteries built into products count, as well as loose batteries.
  • We work with approved battery compliance schemes to register and report for you.

The Basics

What a WEEE Producer Compliance Scheme Does

A producer compliance scheme takes on your legal obligations under the WEEE Regulations 2013. It registers you with the regulator, reports what you place on the market, and finances the collection and treatment of an equivalent share of waste electricals.

If you place 5 tonnes or more of electrical and electronic equipment on the UK market in a year, you must join an approved scheme. Below 5 tonnes, you can register direct with the regulator as a small producer, or join a scheme so the paperwork is handled for you.

Who It Applies To

Manufacturers, brands, importers and, since 12 August 2025, online marketplaces selling for overseas sellers.

The 5 Tonne Line

5 tonnes or more a year: join a scheme. Under 5 tonnes: register direct by 31 January, or join a scheme.

What You Report

The weight you place on the market, by category and by household (B2C) or non-household (B2B) use.

Categories

15 categories, with vapes added as their own category in 2025.

Regulators

Environment Agency, SEPA, Natural Resources Wales or NIEA, depending on where you are registered.

WEEE Compliance Scheme Questions

Still Have a Question?

Speak to the WERCS team on 0845 643 0304 or email [email protected]

Do I need to join a WEEE compliance scheme?

If you place 5 tonnes or more of electrical and electronic equipment on the UK market in a compliance year, yes. Below 5 tonnes you can register direct with the regulator as a small producer by 31 January, or join a scheme and let it handle registration and reporting for you.

When is the deadline to join or switch scheme?

15 November for the following compliance year. Your scheme then registers you by 30 November. You cannot move scheme part way through a compliance year.

How much does WEEE compliance cost?

It depends on how much you place on the market, which categories it falls into and whether it is household or non-household equipment. We give you a fixed quote after a free desktop audit.

Do online marketplaces have WEEE obligations?

Yes. Since 12 August 2025, online marketplaces are treated as producers for electrical products sold through them by overseas sellers.

Can WERCS help with batteries as well?

Yes. We help battery producers understand their obligations, register and report, working with approved battery compliance schemes.
