WEEE Registration for UK Producers

Every producer of electrical and electronic equipment in the UK registers each compliance year. The route you take depends on how much you place on the market.

Who Registers

Do You Need WEEE Registration

You need WEEE registration if your business counts as a producer of electrical and electronic equipment in the UK. That covers more businesses than most expect, including importers and online marketplaces.

Buying equipment abroad for your own business use does not make you a producer. If an overseas manufacturer supplies you and you sell the products on in the UK, the first UK business in the supply chain registers and reports them.

Check whether you need to register

Your Own Brand

You make electrical products, or have them made, and sell them in the UK under your own brand.

Rebranded Products

You sell another maker's equipment under your brand. If the maker's brand shows on the product, they are the producer.

Importers

You import electrical equipment into the UK as part of your business.

Online Marketplaces

Since 12 August 2025, marketplaces supplying UK households on behalf of overseas sellers are producers.

Overseas Distance Sellers

You sell direct to UK users from abroad. You must appoint a UK authorised representative or join a UK scheme.

5 Tonnes or More

Registering Through a Compliance Scheme

If you place 5 tonnes or more of electrical and electronic equipment on the UK market in a year, you must join an approved producer compliance scheme. The scheme registers you with the regulator and takes on your obligation to finance collection and treatment.

1

Join by 15 November

Join a scheme by 15 November for the next compliance year. New to the market after that date? You have 28 days from first placing equipment on the market.

2

Your Scheme Registers You

Your scheme registers you as a member with the regulator, and you receive your producer registration number.

3

Your Scheme Reports for You

You give your scheme what you place on the market, by category and by household or non-household use. It files the returns.

Crossed 5 tonnes part way through the year? Small producers who reach 5 tonnes must tell their regulator and join a scheme within 28 days.

Registering Direct as a Small Producer

If you place under 5 tonnes a year, you can register direct with the regulator as a small producer instead of joining a scheme. You register through the WEEE online service, which assigns your regulator from where your business is based.

Small producers can still join a scheme. Many do, so registration and reporting are handled for them and there is one point of contact if their volumes grow.

Help With Registering

A third party can register and submit data on your behalf.

After You Register

Your WEEE Registration Number, Fees and the Public Register

Your WEEE Registration Number

Registering gives you a producer registration number. You must make sure the distributors you supply have it, and retailers and marketplaces will ask for it before listing your products.

WEEE Registration Fees

Small producers pay the regulator's registration charge. Scheme members pay their scheme, which covers registration, reporting and the collection and treatment of waste electricals.

FAQs

WEEE Registration Questions

Not Sure How to Register?

Speak to the WERCS team on 0845 643 0304 or email [email protected]

Do I need WEEE registration if I place under 5 tonnes a year?

Yes. You still register every year, but you can do it direct with the regulator as a small producer by 31 January, instead of joining a compliance scheme. You can also join a scheme and let it handle registration and reporting for you.

When is the deadline to join a WEEE compliance scheme?

15 November for the following compliance year, and your scheme then registers you. If you start placing equipment on the UK market after 15 November, you must join within 28 days.

What happens if I go over 5 tonnes part way through the year?

Small producers who reach 5 tonnes or more in a compliance year must tell their regulator and join a compliance scheme within 28 days.

Who do I give my WEEE registration number to?

You must make sure the distributors you supply have your producer registration number. Retailers and online marketplaces will usually ask for it before they list your products.

Can someone register on my behalf?

Yes. A third party can register a small producer and submit its data. If you join a compliance scheme, the scheme registers you as a member.

Do overseas businesses need WEEE registration?

If you sell direct to UK users from abroad, you must appoint a UK authorised representative or join a UK compliance scheme before placing equipment on the market. If you supply through a UK importer or retailer, that UK business registers instead.

What happens if I do not register?

Not registering as a small producer or joining a compliance scheme when you should is an offence, and you may face enforcement action.
