How Switching to WERCS Works

You give notice to your current scheme. We handle the rest: the data, the handover and your registration for the new compliance year.

  1. Now until15 November

Get Your Quote and Give Notice

Book a free desktop audit. We review your obligations, tonnage and category splits to confirm what you need, then send a clear quotation with each element set out separately. When you are ready, give notice to your current scheme and join WERCS by 15 November.

    Switching Checklist

Gather these before you change scheme. With them in hand, your desktop audit gives an accurate quote and the handover runs on time.

    • Your scheme contract. Your membership terms, the notice period, how notice must be given, and your current contract end date.
    • Your registration details. Your producer registration number, registered company name and number, and your regulator.
    • Placed on market data. Tonnage by WEEE category, split into household (B2C) and non-household (B2B), for this year and last.
    • Submitted returns and evidence. Copies of the returns your scheme has filed for you, and any evidence documents it holds.
    • What has changed. New product lines, new sales channels, a change in tonnage, and any battery or packaging obligations.

Leaving it late? Leaving it late usually means either paying two schemes or waiting another full year to move. Start the conversation early and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth doing now or at the next changeover.

  2. By30 November

    We Register You

We register you with the regulator for the new compliance year. Leaving a WEEE compliance scheme does not mean starting again. Your registration number, your history and your obligations all carry across.

    Your Registration Number Stays

The regulator confirms your existing producer registration number to your new scheme rather than issuing a new one. Your distributors, retailers and marketplace listings need no update.

    Your Data Moves With You

Ask your current scheme for copies of the data it has submitted for you, your registration details and your evidence documents. We use them to pick up your reporting without a break.

    No Gap in Compliance

Your old scheme covers you to 31 December. Your new scheme registers you by 30 November for the full year from 1 January, and the regulator confirms it in writing.

  3. From1 January

    Your New Compliance Year Starts

Your new compliance year starts with WERCS reporting for you. You get a named contact and an agreed reporting schedule from day one.

Why Producers Move

Does Any of This Sound Familiar?

Producers usually move scheme for the same reasons. Tick the ones that apply to you and see how WERCS handles each one.

  • You cannot get hold of anyone when reporting deadlines are close.
  • Your invoice is hard to follow, so you cannot budget for it.
  • You do not know where your waste goes.
  • Audits are a scramble.
  • You feel like just an account number.
  • Your business has changed, with new product lines, a jump in tonnage, or a move into batteries and packaging.

How WERCS Handles It

The Rules

The Rules of Switching

You can change WEEE compliance scheme once a year, at the changeover between compliance years. A scheme cannot remove a member during a compliance year, so the move takes effect from 1 January.

Once a Year

The compliance year runs 1 January to 31 December. Switching happens at the changeover, not part way through.

No Mid-Year Exit

A scheme cannot remove a member during a compliance year, so you stay covered until the year ends.

Your Notice Period

Your current scheme contract sets how much notice you must give. Check it before you plan the move.

Household and Non-Household

If you place both on the market, you can use two schemes, one for each. You can move one or both.

Switching Questions

Thinking About Moving?

Speak to the WERCS team on 0845 643 0304 or email [email protected]

When can I switch WEEE compliance scheme?

Between compliance years. A scheme cannot remove a member during a compliance year, so you join your new scheme by 15 November and it registers you for the year starting 1 January. Check the notice period in your current contract first, as it may require notice earlier than 15 November.

What happens if I miss the 15 November deadline?

Your current scheme will usually register you for next year by 30 November, and a producer can only be registered once for each compliance year. Leaving it late usually means either paying two schemes or waiting another full year to move. Talk to us early and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth doing now or at the next changeover.

Is switching compliance scheme complicated?

Not for you. You give notice to your current scheme, and we handle the data handover and your registration for the new compliance year. Your desktop audit checks your tonnage and category figures before anything moves.

Will there be a gap in my compliance?

No gap is expected when the timing is managed. Your current scheme covers you to 31 December, and your new scheme registers you by 30 November for the full year from 1 January. That is why we recommend starting early.

Do I need to re-register with the Environment Agency?

Not yourself. Your new scheme registers you with the regulator for the following compliance year, and the regulator confirms your registration in writing.

Will my producer registration number change?

No. If you were issued a producer registration number in the last five years, the regulator confirms that number to your new scheme rather than issuing a new one, so your distributors and marketplace listings stay the same.

What do I need from my current scheme?

Check the notice period in your membership terms, then request copies of the data it has submitted for you, your registration details and your evidence documents. We will tell you exactly what to ask for.

Can I move my battery and packaging obligations too?

Yes. Battery and packaging obligations are assessed separately from WEEE, and bringing them together gives you one contact and one reporting schedule. Your desktop audit covers all three, and sets out what membership would cost before you commit.

Take the Complexity Out of Switching

A free desktop audit confirms your obligations, the right time to move and what membership would cost. No commitment.
